As offices around Hobart and William Smith Colleges work to improve retention rates of first year students, the Interfraternity Council (IFC) has a suggestion of its own: allow Hobart students to join fraternities in the spring semester of their first year.

Currently students may only join Greek Life if they are of good academic and social standing, are sophomores (completed at least 6.5 credits), and have a minimum of a 2.5 GPA. The IFC is considering a plan that would allow students to rush after their first semester, and would also increase the minimum GPA requirement (while the plan is not finalized it is likely that the requirement would become 2.75.)

Once the IFC’s executive board finalizes the proposal they hope to have one of the Hobart Student Trustees (both are members of Greek Organizations) present their proposal to the Board of Trustees and Hobart Deans before the end of the semester.
