The Herald is published by the students of Hobart and William Smith Colleges. The Herald was founded in 1879 and is the oldest newspaper of Geneva, New York.
The Herald is the official newspaper of Hobart and William Smith Colleges. Our purpose is to publish news and content relevant to the HWS community in print and online. The Herald is independent and written and published by the students of Hobart and William Smith. It is independent of the Colleges’ administration, faculty, and offices. The Editor-in-Chief and Editorial Board have final say on all content; faculty, staff, and students may not demand conditions regarding publication of any material.
Herald alumni have gone on to write and to work for many media companies or pursue graduate work in journalism.
The Colleges do not publish the Herald or influence its content, nor is it responsible for any opinions expressed in the Herald.
The Herald publishes a news magazine twice each semester, and continuously online.

Submissions:
The Herald welcomes Letters to the Editor for people to share their opinions on topics of interest to the Hobart and William Smith community. The submission deadline for letters to the editor is noon on Monday for publication in Friday’s issue. All submissions must be submitted via email to herald@hws.edu.

Opinion Section:
Our goal for columns in the Opinion section is to show students the humanity of the Hobart and William Smith community beyond just the student persona. Through contributions from students, faculty and staff (none of whom have to necessarily affiliate with the Herald), we hope to draw articles on any topic, but are hoping that all draw from personal experience in some respect. We are hoping to draw submissions from all students, and we hope it becomes a space that emphasizes ideas, opinions, and voices that are less frequently heard; further, articles need not take traditional Opinion style, but may include more artistic forms of expression. Like other Opinion articles, these articles will be fact-checked and may be edited for grammar and style. Students who contribute to this position may be asked to edit their work with the section editors.
Website Moderation Policy:
The Herald welcomes thoughtful debate and critique in its comment sections. The goal is to provide a civil forum where all voices can be heard and readers can exchange spirited commentary. Accordingly, the Herald reserves the right to moderate and delete comments. Examples of commentary that will not be tolerated include: personal attacks, defamation, hate speech, commercial promotions, and impersonations. The Herald also reserves the right to ban repeat offenders.
