The spring has been an exciting time for HWS Athletics. Hobart Baseball has begun its inaugural season, and teams such as William Smith Lacrosse and Hobart Tennis have continued to have strong seasons. 

The William Smith Lacrosse team currently has an undefeated season, with nine of their 15 wins being Liberty League conference matches. The team is led by Maddie Montgomery ’23 who has 72 points, with 58 being goals, becoming the first Heron to have two 50 goal seasons since 2003. Other stat leaders include Allie McGinty ’24 with 47 points and Kaitlin Pellechia ’23 with 36 points. 

The Hobart Baseball has begun their season with a 9-20 start, 3-14 within the conference. They began the season with a booming 12-1 win against Dean College, and have seen recent victories against Ithaca College, Wells College, and Keuka College. The Statesmen are led by Ty Gallagher ’24 with 26 runs and 32 hits, followed closely by Christian Petry ’26 with 19 runs and 28 hits and Will Jones ’26 with 17 runs and 28 hits.  

Hobart Lacrosse currently stands 5-7, with one of the victories within the Atlantic 10. The team’s most decisive victory was against St. Bonaventure University, winning 24-10. The team is led in points by Anthony Dattellas ’24, with 36 on the season, closely trailed by Will Delano ’25 with 27 points and Troy Barthelme ’23 with 25 points.  

William Smith Tennis ended their season 7-11, with two wins in the Liberty League Conference. Their spring season included a trip to Orlando, Florida during Spring Break, where they split, winning against St. Catherine University and Oglethorpe University, and falling to Salisbury University and Luther College.  

Hobart Tennis is currently 16-4 on the season, and has advanced to the Liberty League Finals following a victory over Vassar College on April 29. Undefeated at home, the Statesmen are led by Nick Fischer ’26, who is 20-4 overall, closely trailed by Sean Pesin ’24 (17-6) and Hyat Oyer ’25 (15-6). 

The Hobart and William Smith Rowing Teams have continued to have strong seasons. The Hobart Rowing team is ranked 23rd in Ten Eyck Team Rankings, with the second varsity eight ranked 25th and third varsity eight ranked 18th. At the 2023 Cayuga Duels, the Statesmen swept Ithaca in the Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight, and Varsity Four races.  

The Herons have received the Liberty League Boat of the Week award for their Novice Four boat, powered by Ava Drew ’26, Parker Condon ’26, Kendall Sundstrom ’26, Jacquelyn Sullivan ’26, and Elizabeth Roser ’26. The Herons won two of three races at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, and the Novice Four placed second at the Skidmore Sprints. 

The Hobart and William Smith Sailing Teams have competed and seen victory in numerous regattas this season. Most recently, Heron sailors placed ninth at the MAISA Women’s Championship and HWS sailors placed 13th in the Admiral’s Cup.  

In the weeks to come, there are many spring sports competitions to look out for as the semester closes. Both the William Smith Lacrosse team and the William Smith Rowing team will advance to the Liberty League semifinals, and Hobart Rowing will compete in the NIRA Championships.
